Throughout this year, ten young people from the Greenwich community have been developing their creative writing skills and learning the tricks of the theatre trade as part of the Greenwich Young Writers Programme. This night represents the culmination of ten months of hard work for our members, in the form of ten short plays inspired by and celebrating the borough in which they live.
Directed by Roy Alexander Weise, winner of the JMK award, designed by Mila Sanders, and performed by a company of professional actors, this eclectic collection of plays looks at everything from online dating to meteor showers, from people trafficking to driverless cars; all the time studying the challenges and opportunities of living in this borough throughout its rich cultural history.
Roy Alexander Weise, Director "Before becoming a director I was an actor. And then somebody gave me the chance to write a play. Suddenly I realised had a voice. I realised how politicised and sensitive I was and that my thoughts and opinions mattered. There was nothing more satsfying then hearing audiences laugh and cry with us. This is what we are hoping to do for these brilliant, diverse, exciting first time writers. Give them a voice. Let them know that their narrative is just as important as those of the past, of today and of those yet to come."
Robert Marsden, Course leader "For new writers, the opportunity to have work professionally produced for an audience is vital: it adds an electricity to the writing process and allows the writers a chance to allow their dialogue and stories to affect an audience. In this case, the voices of young Greenwich based writers are being heard supported by a fully professional cast and creative team led by Roy Alexander Weise."
All profits from the performances will go towards developing the programme for future generations of young writers.
